Directory for Catechesis Webinar Series

Below are four webinars in this series focusing on the new Directory for Catechesis. The webinars focus on major themes from the new Directory for Catechesis published by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization in July. Topics in this webinar series include accompaniment, the new tasks of adult catechesis, and catechesis as a laboratory of dialogue.

Catechesis in the Process of Evangelization

This webinar features Archdiocese of Washington staffers Kately Javier (Faith Formation) and Jonathan Lewis (Evangelization & Pastoral Concerns), as well as Center Director Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C., for a conversation about the role of catechesis in the broader process of evangelization. Kately, Jonathan, and Fr. Frank discuss the implications of the Directory's emphasis on the relationship of evangelization and catechesis, as well as its effects on the future of catechesis in the United States.
This webinar is the first in our series that will consider the major themes from the new Directory for Catechesis published by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization in July. Upcoming topics for our series include accompaniment, the new tasks of adult catechesis, and catechesis as a laboratory of dialogue.

Catechesis, Accompaniment, and Communion with the Person of Christ

This webinar explores how the Directory for Catechesis envisions accompaniment as an important element in accomplishing the definitive aim of catechesis: putting people in intimate communion with the Person of Christ (Catechesi Tradendae, 5). Dr. Susan Timoney, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America, Steven Serafin, Center Collaborator and Associate Director for Catechesis in Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Newark, and Colleen Campbell, Center Coordinator of Formation Programs and co-author of The Art of Accompaniment: Theological, Spiritual, and Practical Elements of Building a More Relational Church, discuss the theme of accompaniment in the new directory and its implications for evangelization, catechesis, and the entire Church.

With special focus on chapter 8, section 4 of the new Directory for Catechesis, this webinar explores stages of adulthood and the "gateway moments" that provide avenues for forming faithful adults in parishes and faith communities. We also discussed the lived experience of adult faith formation during a pandemic, and what threads of cultural shifts we can find to inspire our ministries moving forward in this COVID and post-COVID reality.

Directory for Catechesis Webinar Series: "Catechesis as a Missionary Going Forth"

This webinar, produced in collaboration with Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN), explores the role of long-term and short-term service in evangelization and catechesis, as well as how these service opportunities can inspire Catholic parishes and schools to carry out the formation of Catholics in new and refreshing ways. Center Assistant Director of Administration and Chair of the Board of Directors for Catholic Volunteer Network, Monica Thom Konschnik, moderates a conversation with Jenn Wood, Formation Coordinator for Spiritus Ministries, and Pam Tremblay, Providence College Director of Service Immersion and Social Justice, about the relationship between service and forming mature missionary disciples.

Formation of Catechists and Catechetical Leaders

In this webinar, Katie Diltz, Associate Director of Echo in the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame, proposes a program of formation for catechists and catechetical leaders. Based on the dimensions of formation named in the Directory and on her work forming catechetical leaders in the McGrath Institute’s Echo program, Katie helps participants identify key components to incorporate in their respective formation plans in order to help each catechist and catechetical leader to “take shape, which means unveiling his [or her] deepest identity which is that of being a son [or daughter] of God in profound communion with [others]” (Directory for Catechesis, 130).
