Experiencing God's Mercy

Recently, during a parish mission for Lent that focused on the Jubilee of Mercy, I found that a simple review of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy had a profound impact on those who participated. My short reflections on the works of mercy were not meant to be at time of group guilt about what had not been done, but instead provided an opportunity for the participants and for me to reflect, and then -  hopefully - act. In the reaction of the participants, I witnessed a revival of faith and a rekindling of charity that, I believe, will lead to deeper living as apostles or missionary disciples.

God's mercy and love are offered not just for a moment, but forever. Lent is a perfect time to experience again God's mercy and live well the works of mercy. As we continue through the season of Lent, we strive to know Jesus Christ more fully through the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Sometimes almsgiving is seen as something simply monetary. If almsgiving, however, is not only related to our treasure, but also to our time and talent, then we can see how easily the corporal and spiritual works of mercy can help us express all three aspects of this Lenten practice.

Pope Francis invites us to reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy in his Lenten Message,

"For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God's word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy - counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer - we touch more directly our own sinfulness."

May the charity of Christ urge us on to live well the works of mercy!

I noticed that you used the painting representing the parable of "the prodigal son." It occurs to me that the phrase is not mentioned in the Gospel. That would lead one to believe that the most important person in the story is the younger, prodigal, son. God, being represented by the father, is full of mercy for his younger, wayward, son. All humans have been the younger son, and some of us may become him in the future. It is of course reassuring that our God is capable of such mercy to us even after the bad and disrespectful things we have done.
The most interesting person in the story, however, is the older son. I would love to know more about him after the parable ends. We have all been the older son as well: petulant, deserving, and entitled. The true meaning of the story, I believe, is how the older son displays mercy to his brother and father, both of whom he believes had failed to show HIM the proper respect.
His conversion is the true meaning of the story. Everyone is represented in this story except Jesus, however. I don't believe that is true. Jesus had to live as a human, inherent with all its faults and missteps. His embrace by His Father is the culmination of the good work he was sent to do. But do not forget, that at times, Jesus was the older son! He begged his father to take the task from him, and even questioned if his father was abandoning him. If anyone was entitled to grace and mercy, it was the Son of God. But he may have had moments of anguish about it.
As Jesus showed us, it is the older son who needs to put aside what his human wants are, and submit to the will of the Father.
